Book Review: Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris

Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13)Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh, much better than the previous book. I loved being back inside Sookie's head. Lots of action and humour.

Sometimes I do wonder if Charlaine Harris introduces too many characters, because you do have to remember who they all are. But this being her last book in the series, I suppose she wanted to give all her favourite characters a mention.

I don't really want to say too much about this book, in case I leave a spoiler, but this book finished Sookie's story how I wanted it to. So it left me feeling happy and contented. I won't say why... you'll have to read it for yourself.

These books have been perfect brain candy. Light and dark. Sexy and fun. I've enjoyed the series thoroughly.

I have to share this from the book - this is the kind of humour I like, with the characters in grave danger...

"She [Amelia] wondered if she could cast a stunning spell without any herbs or preparation. It wasn't like in the Harry Potter books, though she and every other witch of her acquaintance had often wished it were."

I'm tempted to give this five stars just because Charlaine Harris didn't disappoint me with her ending.

Book Review: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse #12)Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is certainly not the best book of the series. It's probably closer to 2 and a half stars from me. The murder doesn't happen until chapter three! The pacing was slow in places, and the author does have a habit of providing so many character names you can lose track. I think some characters can remain nameless - really they can!

However, the ending did redeem itself, and I do enjoy Sookie's thoughts. This book is brain candy like all the rest. I just wonder if Charlaine Harris has tried too hard to please the readers by stretching it out too much - this book is like some of the others, a filler.

And there certainly isn't the same level of sex. (This may disappoint some).

However...

I love that Bill loves her no matter what - and yet would never ever convert her to a vampire (not that she would beg for it). Have I said before how much I LOVE Bill?

But I also love Sam, too. Just because he's a good guy and he's a breather.

I am hoping Sookie gets her wish, and will get married and have children, and lead a normal-ish life. She will get her happy ever after basically. I'm hoping this will be with Sam. If book 13 doesn't deliver this, I will be disappointed. lol!

I'm all for the romance and happy ever afters me.

Book Review: Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11)Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Although it was great to get back into Sookie's head, and having read (not that long ago) 'A Touch Of The Dead' made it easier, I still couldn't quite give it four stars.

Not one of Harris' best, it felt like another of her books, there to set way for the next one. I think at times it lacked emotion, we were told Sookie was pissed, but couldn't really see it.

If you're a Sookie fan, you should enjoy it but it's not likely to be your favourite. (Mine is still Dead To The World).

Book Review: A Touch of Dead by Charlaine Harris

A Touch of Dead (Sookie Stackhouse)A Touch of Dead by Charlaine Harris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book contains five short stories and they are entwined in the series of Sookie Stackhouse - so they are set at different stages of Sookie's life and where she's at with various different characters.

Having been waiting for the release of Dead Reckoning (book 11) it was nice to have a reminder of what being inside Sookie's head was like. It took a while getting used to, but it was fun.

My favourite of the five is One Word Answer (I'd give it four stars), mainly because it gives us a bit more background to Sookie's cousin's (Hadley) death and it contained two favourite characters Bill and Bubba. I do love Eric but for me, there is something about Bill. You just know he'd do anything, absolutely anything, for Sookie his love runs that deep. I wonder if this (scene) was cut from the book, because I always felt Definitely Dead missed something - it was this short story!

My second favourite was Gift Wrapped but I don't want to say why. I don't want to give spoilers.

Worth dipping into this book if you're a Charlaine Harris fan... however, might want to make sure you've read up to books 9 or 10 before doing so.

Book Review: Dead And Gone by Charlaine Harris

This review does contain slight spoilers of the book, but I've tried to be as vague as I can.

27 books read - 13 to go!

Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9)Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh no, I've finished this and have no more to read.  (Gotta wait until Book 10 comes out in paperback... I suppose).

I loved this book!  I think this could be one of my favourites out of the whole series - although I loved them all really.

Great escapism! Funny, steamy romance and some sadness in this one as we have to say goodbye to some characters.  Charlaine Harris is not afraid to kill off characters.  She's also not afraid to put poor Sookie through the mill.  A little bit more 'horror' in this book, though done tastefully enough not to make you squeamish but to give you a good idea.

There was enough of Eric to satisfy the taste buds.  I am falling for Eric faster than Sookie me thinks!

And Bill - oh my God at one point I was soooo worried about that vamp.  I still am actually.  I'm a fan of Bill's.  Some think he's boring, but you just know he loves Sookie.

And Niall's fleeting words - exactly, Sookie, which Vamp is he talking about? Although I think it applies to both, I think I know who he was referring.

Maybe I would have liked a little bit more of Sam at the end.  It's so obvious he loves Sookie and wants to free her from the Vampire's hold.  Although Eric's intentions are good, but selfish.  Eric is trying to mean well.  Sookie would probably be a lot safer without their hold... although in this book, the Vamps really do prove their worth.

There was some good stuff talked through with Sookie and Eric too.  I was so glad to read that she doesn't want to be 'converted' at all.

So... now I wait, like the rest of you.  Not sure what I want to read now.  How will anything else compete?

Book Review: From Dead To Worse by Charlaine Harris

From Dead to Worse (Sookie Stackhouse, #8)From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Like the rest of these books, this really is good escapism.

Sookie is trying her best to be a good Christian. And to be honest I like the internal conflicts she has.  Makes her so much more human and she gives us a good chuckle.

Another witty, fun and well paced book, that always gets me excited when Eric shows up.  I really am falling for this Vamp!

There was a nice bit of Sam in this book too.  He's another favourite of mine.  I can't help thinking he's really the one for Sookie, but he being her boss stops her from entertaining that idea. But I live in hope!

I don't want to say too much.  I hate to give away spoilers.  I can see where others have written their review, I agree this book does have about 3 mini stories going on within it, and maybe they could have been more cleverly interlaced, but then it might have got confusing.  It didn't put me off.  This book is possibly setting up things to come in other future books...  so maybe it had to be done.  I still didn't find this book dull to read.

I can't put these books down, so will have to start reading book 9 now - Dead and Gone.  I don't have the next one... will have to wait for my birthday or something.  How will I cope?

Book Review: All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris

Didn't realise I could do this... so might do this more often.

All Together Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #7)All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another great book in the Sookie Stackhouse adventures if you want escapism.

I love the humour of Sookie. Nicely sarcastic for me.

This book probably wasn't as good as some of the previous ones, (although I still enjoyed it) but we get some new characters, new creatures.  Enough of Eric to keep you (and Sookie) on your toes.

I will say this again.  I prefer these books to the Twilight series (I know, I know those are written for teenagers), purely because we are reminded that vampires are monsters.

I like Sookie, because she never once begs to be made a vampire.  Far from it.  In fact at the then of this book she really has had enough of them.  Sookie seems a real enough character to me, in the world Charlaine Harris has produced.

I think I read this slower, just due to knuckling down and doing stuff I was supposed to be doing, and not reading this book (it took great restraint) and so maybe I didn't really get into it like I have the others.  So hence four stars from me, instead of five.

Favourite quote from this (had my laughing so loud):

"Where was John Wayne when you needed him? Or Bruce Willis?  Or Matt Damon?  I would be glad to see Jason Bourne right now."
